Meet Dr. Malone
Doctor Stephen Malone is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with more than 2o years’ experience specializing in treatment of the spine.
After graduating from Jefferson Medical College in 1995, he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati, which included nine months at The Children’s Hospital of Cincinnati. In 2001, he completed a fellowship at the Center for Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery at the University of Southern California Hospital under Drs. Robert G. Watkins and Lytton A. Williams. His training dealt with all aspects of spinal pathology with a particular emphasis on the treatment of sports-related spine injury.
As a fellow of the North American Spine Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Malone is highly trained in both minimally invasive techniques and complex anterior and posterior procedures of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine for trauma, deformity and degenerative conditions.
Doctor Malone has treated athletes from the NFL, NHL, PGA as well as other professional, college and high school athletes. Although most of his patients are not elite athletes, his treatment goal remains the same – rapid restoration of the patient’s pre-injury level of activity through the use of conservative modalities or surgery, if required.
Doctor Malone’s treatment approach is to assess each patient’s unique issues by carefully listening to, observing and examining the patient. After proper diagnosis, his goal is to assist the patient in deciding a treatment plan through education and the identification of goals and expectations. Treatment typically involves an initial trial of conservative modalities such as medication and physical therapy, among others. Only after these have been exhausted will other techniques be employed.
